First Serve

For anyone who just picked up a racket

You're five rules away from a real game.

Badminton takes a minute to start and a while to feel sure of yourself. Learn the rules that actually come up on court, check what stuck, and walk into your first club night knowing where to stand and when to serve.

your side their side

ClearHigh and deep to their back line. The shot that buys you time to get back to the middle.

Where to play
Most sports halls and leisure centres run a beginner or “social” night. Search your town plus “badminton club beginners” and turn up — clubs are usually short of players, not the other way round.
What to bring
Non-marking indoor trainers and water. Clubs almost always have spare rackets and shuttles for your first few sessions, so buy gear once you know you're staying.
What to play first
Doubles. Less court to cover, more rallies, and a partner who will happily tell you where to stand. Singles is a fitness test you can save for later.
The rules, five ways

Everything you need for your first game.

Pick a tab. The court on the right redraws itself to match what you're reading, so you can see the lines instead of memorising numbers.

One against one

A long, narrow court and nowhere to hide.

In singles the court gets narrower and longer: the two outer tramlines are out, but the very back line is in. Your job is to move your opponent and get back to the middle.

  • SidelinesThe inner lines. Anything landing in the outer tramline is out.
  • Back lineThe outer back line. The full length of the court is live.
  • Serve fromRight service court when your score is even (0, 2, 4…), left when it's odd.
  • Serve toDiagonally, into the box opposite. It must clear the short service line.
  • Base positionCentre of the court, a step behind the short service line. Return to it after every shot.
Beginner habit worth building: after you hit, move back to the middle. Most points at this level are lost by standing still and admiring the shot.
